Dallas Art Museum - A Visitor's Guide

By Mark Traston

The Dallas Museum of Art is an interesting and educational place to visit. The Museum just recently celebrated one hundred years of engaging the citizens of Dallas and visitors with everything from ancient Egyptian collections to magnificent works of art. The museum houses a total art collection of over 23,000 pieces from all around the globe. Everything from African sculptures to the contemporary artwork of Jackson Pollock.

In order to better explore the Dallas Museum of Art, the museum offers many different ways for visitors to explore the museum and become more deeply engaged. They offer various tours and programs that you can become involved with. The first one is called Gallery Talks, which takes place on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. The next program is called See Three, which takes place on July 17th, August 21st and September 18th. It has a start time of 7:00 p.m. Join the Dallas Museum of Art staff for what they refer to as a new and different way to experience the museum. This was inspired by the New Center for Creative Commons, and will push the envelope on how you experience art by using playful experiments and new forms of conversation.

The Dallas Museum of Art offers tours of the Rachofsky House, a home designed by Richard Meier. This residence is home to the Racofsky family collection of contemporary artwork. There is a 25 person per tour limit. If there is a specific idea you have or theme you would like to experience in a private tour setting, you will be able to do this. Customized group tours are available for $30 per group of 15 people. They have specific themed tours already available covering The Reves Collection, Collection Highlights or Special Exhibition Tours. Again, you are able to customize a tour to suit your personal tastes if needed.

The museum also holds concerts featuring various performers throughout the year. And every Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., you can experience what is known as Live at the Dallas Museum of Art. You can attend a music function called Jazz in the Atrium. Listen to some very talented Jazz musicians as you partake in drinking wines that are available to you. Another Thursday night function is Sketching in the Galleries. This is a class that will help you improve on your existing drawing skills, or teach you how to begin drawing. These classes meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., and require you to bring a sketchbook and pencils. If you enjoy captivating musical performances, then you should attend Performances in the Galleries. This music is actually inspired by the museums art exhibitions and collections. These concerts take place on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. With such a rich history and vibrant culture, the Dallas Museum of Art will surely never disappoint any visitor.
